How Scary Are Our Escape Rooms? A Guide to the Haunted Doll Shop and Our Other Rooms

Looking for scary escape rooms near Chicago? Most escape rooms at Just Escape Room in La Grange, IL aren’t scary. The one exception is the Haunted Doll Shop, which is spooky with a few jump scares (and no live actors): players have 60 minutes to break a curse in a spooky doll shop, and we recommend it for ages 13 and up (2–6 players). By contrast, the other three rooms, Cabin Murder (a murder mystery), Floor 66 (a bomb defusal) and The Attic (a treasure hunt), aren’t horror games. Every booking is private, the door is always unlocked, and tickets are $33 per person Monday–Thursday and $36 Friday–Sunday. 512 W Burlington Ave #204, La Grange · (708) 304-0007.

Are Escape Rooms Scary?

People ask us this a lot, especially around Halloween. The short answer is that it depends on which room you book. At Just Escape Room, three of our four private games are built around story and puzzles, not fear. You’re never mixed with another group, and you’re never locked in. If you need a break, you can step out.

Each game lasts 60 minutes, so plan about 75 minutes for check-in and a quick briefing. We’re at 512 W Burlington Ave #204 in downtown La Grange, a short trip from Oak Brook, Downers Grove, Naperville and Chicago.

The Haunted Doll Shop: Our One Scary Room

If you’re looking for scary escape rooms near Chicago, this is the one. The Haunted Doll Shop is our scariest game. A strange doll shop appears at the edge of town overnight. You and your team go in to investigate, and you discover the dolls are cursed. You have 60 minutes to break the curse before you join the collection.

We built it for 2–6 players, ages 13 and up. It’s spooky, with a few jump scares, but there are no live actors in the room. That makes it a good fit for Halloween groups, horror fans and teens who want a spookier night. On the other hand, if you don’t like scary themes, or you’re bringing younger kids, pick one of the other rooms instead.

Want the opening story behind the room? We wrote about it when it launched: Haunted Doll Shop opens in La Grange. To book this room, start on the Haunted Doll Shop page or go straight to Book Now.

Escape Rooms That Aren’t Scary

Searching for escape rooms that are not scary? These three keep the tension in the story and the puzzles, not in a horror theme.

Cabin Murder

Cabin Murder is our newest room: a 60-minute murder mystery for 2–6 players, ages 10 and up. After a hike nearby, you’re the primary suspects. You get one chance to find the murder weapon in a trap-filled cabin and prove your innocence. It’s a mystery, not a haunted house. Note: this room includes an audio puzzle, so deaf or hard-of-hearing groups should choose a different room.

Floor 66

Floor 66 is a bomb-defusal game for 2–10 players, ages 13 and up. You’re hired to get into a high-rise condo, work through the security and stop a self-destruct countdown. It’s tense in a mission-style way, not a horror way.

The Attic

The Attic is a treasure hunt for 2–8 players, ages 10 and up. You’re searching a dusty attic for a legendary adventurer’s hidden treasure before his rival finds it. It’s one of our lighter adventures and a solid pick for families and mixed-age groups.

Planning a Halloween Escape Room Night

October weekends get busy, so it helps to reserve early if you have a specific night in mind. Every booking is private, so your group plays alone. That makes it easy to plan a Halloween outing without strangers in the room.

Is your group split between scare-seekers and everyone else? Mixed groups are welcome to split up. The brave players can take the Haunted Doll Shop, while everyone else plays a calmer room like Cabin Murder, Floor 66 or The Attic at the same time. Call (708) 304-0007 and we’ll help you set it up.

Our hours: Monday–Thursday 4:30–9 PM, Friday 4:30–10:50 PM, Saturday 12–10:50 PM, Sunday 12–9 PM. Planning a Halloween birthday? See our birthday parties page for how private rooms work for parties.

Prices and Kids

Tickets are $33 per person Monday–Thursday and $36 Friday–Sunday (Friday counts as a weekend price day). One child 7 or under plays free per paid ticket. The Haunted Doll Shop and Floor 66 are ages 13+, so for younger kids choose Cabin Murder or The Attic (both 10+).
